GMAP - Greening Mined Areas in the Philippines

Greening Mined Areas
in the Philippines

Restoring mined areas through the Marinduque Bioremediation Protocol—an innovative solution using indigenous mycorrhizal fungi to bring life back to barren, heavy metal-contaminated lands.

What is GMAP?

The Greening Mined Areas in the Philippines (GMAP) Program, managed by Dr. Bonifacio B. Tamparong Jr., tackles land made toxic by heavy metals where plants cannot grow. GMAP uses the Marinduque Bioremediation Protocol, a groundbreaking method using indigenous mycorrhizal fungi. This process revives barren, toxic mined-out lands—bringing back biodiversity, soil health, and community hope. Beyond land restoration, the protocol also enhances agricultural crop production by improving soil health and nutrient uptake.

Our Mission

To rehabilitate mined lands through nature-based, science-driven, and community-led rehabilitation using nature's own tools—indigenous mycorrhizal fungi.

Our Vision

To restore all mined-out lands in the Philippines and create a scalable model for ecological healing across Asia.

Our Solution: The Marinduque Bioremediation Protocol

GMAP applies the MBP—a first-of-its-kind technique in the Philippines. This eco-approach uses indigenous mycorrhizal fungi to:

Revive Toxic Soils

Fungi break down heavy metals, detoxifying the soil and making it fertile for new life.

Improve Crop Productivity

It enhance soil fertility, boost nutrient absorption, and promotes healthier root development through indigenous mycorrhizal fungi..

Reduce Contamination

Actively reduces harmful heavy metal contaminants in the land and surrounding water systems.

Restore Biodiversity

As plants return, so do insects, birds, and other wildlife, rebuilding the entire ecosystem.
